According to water.ca.gov, 2009 marks the third consecutive year of water shortage in California. On February 27, 2009 the Governor announced a state of emergency and ordered immediate action to manage our water shortage.
This could be potentially damaging to Ventura County Landscapes but no need to fear, there are many ways to increase the efficiency of your current irrigation system.
Whether we’re Landscaping Ventura County, Los Angeles County or cities in between, we can work with you and your landscape to ensure water conservation techniques are properly implemented.
To the right is a picture of a high efficiency, high quality drip system in a landscape specifically designed to be drought resistant. Although drip systems aren’t always the solution and you’ll be hard pressed to find a system that’s easy to maintain; this drip system was the perfect solution for the client. Close to 90% of the time, adjustments to your current landscape and irrigation system can save you gallons of water.
Out of all the cities in Ventura County, only two aren’t imposing strict regulation.
Here are a couple regulations that directly impact your landscape or garden
- Watering is prohibited between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. except by use of a hand-held bucked or hand-held hose with an attached, self closing nozzle (your standard hand-held spray attachment).
- You cannot run your sprinklers for more than 15 at a time unless you’re using a high efficiency drip system.
Here are a couple of tips that will help your plants.
- Set your sprinkler system to go off early in the morning, just before the sun comes up (around 2:00 am). That way your plants will have time to assimilate the water before the heat evaporates it.
- Consider adding water-saving polymer crystals when planting a new garden.
- Add a layer of wood chips or even gravel around your plants. This will let water get through and prevent water from getting hit by direct sunlight, preventing the water from being evaporated.
